Lincolnshire is buzzing with excitement! The Lincoln Zoo in Newball, Lincolnshire, has just become home to a very special resident: Zara the sloth bear.
Her arrival is a landmark moment, as Zara is the first and only female Indian sloth bear in the United Kingdom in over four decades! This seven-year-old bear's journey from Singapore Zoo marks a critical new chapter for wildlife conservation in the UK.
A Long Journey for a Crucial Cause
Zara's relocation was no small feat. After an 18-month preparation process, she embarked on a 16-hour journey spanning Singapore, Istanbul, and London before finally settling into her heated enclosure at Lincoln Zoo.
Zoo director Neil Mumby highlighted the importance of her arrival, describing it as a "rare opportunity to contribute to the global conservation of a species facing steep population decline."
"To finally welcome Zara and to play a direct role in conserving such a unique and underrepresented species is a huge privilege for our whole team." – Charlie Mumby, Lincoln Zoo's General Manager.
Partnering for the Future: Randhir and Zara
Zara will soon be paired with five-year-old Randhir, a male sloth bear who arrived earlier this year from Germany. This pairing is part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP), which coordinates breeding efforts to protect vulnerable species.
The goal is to create a vital new bloodline in the UK, strengthening the species' long-term survival. As Randhir and Zara meet, we are all hoping for a successful "dating game," as described by Neil Mumby!
Why Are Sloth Bears So Important?
The Indian sloth bear ($Melursus~ursinus$) is a fascinating and formidable species known for its long, curved claws and shaggy coat. They are primarily insectivores, using those impressive claws to dig for ants and termites.
Sadly, sloth bears are currently listed as vulnerable, with fewer than 20,000 remaining in the wild across their native habitats in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal. This makes the conservation efforts at Lincoln Zoo even more vital.
Plan Your Visit to See Zara!
Zara is currently settling in and "acclimatising well." While she and Randhir have already caught glimpses of each other across their enclosures, their formal introduction will take place once she is fully settled and comfortable.
Keep an eye on the Lincoln Zoo social media channels for updates on when you can meet Zara the sloth bear in person! By visiting, you are helping to support these crucial international health and conservation efforts.
