Celebrating Excellence Across Three Award Categories
This year’s NSF Awards will spotlight achievements in three key categories, each designed to highlight a unique facet of scientific excellence:
🔬 NSF Research Awards: Honoring Groundbreaking Discoveries
First introduced in 1984 as Merit Awards, the NSF Research Awards recognize outstanding contributions to science made through NSF-funded projects. These awards serve both as recognition and motivation for researchers engaged in high-quality scientific work.
- 7 Research Awards (including 1 joint award)
- 6 Certificates of Commendation
- ~50 researchers will be honored for their achievements
🎓 SUSRED Awards: Nurturing the Next Generation of Researchers
The Support Scheme for Supervision of Research Degrees (SUSRED) Awards, initiated in 2012, acknowledge researchers who successfully supervise high-caliber postgraduate degrees. These awards encourage the development of a strong research culture across universities and institutes.
- 21 SUSRED Awards will be given to 54 researchers
- Recipients represent 14 universities and research institutions island-wide
📚 Highly Cited Paper Awards (HCPA): Spotlight on Influence and Impact
To recognize scholarly influence through citation metrics, the NSF launched the Highly Cited Paper Awards (HCPA). These awards honor articles published in:
- Journal of the National Science Foundation (JNSF)
- Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences (SLJSS)
Articles published between 2019–2025 were assessed via SCOPUS citations as of May 2025, identifying the most impactful research works.
A Celebration of Knowledge and Innovation
The NSF Awards Ceremony 2024 isn't just an event—it's a national recognition of scientific passion, hard work, and vision. It reinforces the NSF’s commitment to fostering research excellence and innovation for the betterment of society.
As Sri Lanka continues to build its scientific future, events like these illuminate the path forward—one discovery at a time.
