In 2016, scientists made an incredible discovery — a massive cosmic structure called the BOSS Great Wall, made up of 830 galaxies stretching over 1 billion light-years wide! This giant wall of galaxies isn’t a physical “wall” like on Earth but a huge network of galaxy clusters, superclusters, dark matter, and gas linked by gravity.
The BOSS Great Wall was discovered using data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), a project designed to map the large-scale structure of the universe. This is why the cosmic giant is named the “BOSS” Great Wall.
For comparison, our Milky Way galaxy is just one galaxy, while this structure contains hundreds of them. It’s even larger than other famous cosmic giants like the Sloan Great Wall or the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall.
What makes this discovery fascinating is that according to current cosmological theories, structures this enormous are unexpected. The BOSS Great Wall challenges our understanding of how the universe formed and evolved after the Big Bang.
This discovery reminds us how little we truly know about the vastness of the cosmos. The universe continues to surprise us, inviting scientists and curious minds alike to explore its endless mysteries.
